The Master Cleanse diet is also known as the Maple Syrup diet or Lemon Detox diet. It is a liquid detox diet used to cleanse the body and promote weight loss. The Master Cleanse diet was created in 1941 by Stanley Burroughs. He claimed that the liquid cleanse was a natural and healthy way to flush deadly pesticides and toxins out from the body. The Master Cleanse diet was originally formulated as a treatment for ulcers as well as a detox. Its popularity increased in 2004 after Peter Glickman published his book “Lose Weight, Have More Energy, and Be Happier in 10 Days.”

The contents of the Master Cleanse lemonade include:

  • 2 tbsp. of freshly squeezed organic lemon juice
  • 2 tbsp. of natural grade B maple syrup
  • 1/10 tsp. of cayenne pepper (ground).
  • 10 oz. of filtered water

During the second phase, you’ll take an herbal laxative, which you can buy over-the-counter at the local pharmacy, or do a morning salt water flush consisting of sea salt and water. The goal is to induce bowel movements.

The last phase is the Ease Out phase. It is nothing other than the reverse form of the Ease-In stage:

  • 1st day: orange juice
  • 2nd day: soup broth, vegetable and fruit juices.
  • 3rd day: living foods

After completing the Master Cleanse, you’ll have to wait for a minimum of 60 days before doing another.

What is the health benefit of the master cleanse diet?

The Master Cleanse Diet promises to boost the body’s health and energize it. Toxins are flushed from your body throughout the cleanse. Also, you’ll lose some weight.

The pros and cons of the master cleanse diet

Because calorie intake is very low in the master cleanse diet, the dieters will most certainly lose weight. But then, you end up taking no more than 600-1,200 calories daily, which isn’t up to the recommended number for the average adult. An average adult should take no less than 2,000 calories per day. The Master Cleanse diet doesn’t involve exercise. But then, engaging in physical activity on a low-calorie diet would be completely out of place. Master Cleanse dieters often experience the following symptoms while on the cleanse:
